About

My name is Brian Droitcour and I’m a writer, translator, and curator. This blog is my public diary, for writing about art and social media and other things of interest to me. Don’t expect much.

“Culture Two” is the name of a book by Vladimir Paperny that theorizes an oscillation of Russian culture between revolutionary and reactionary poles: Culture-1 and Culture-2. I registered the domain five years ago, wrote a few posts, abandoned it and forgot about it. I don’t plan for this blog to have any substantial connection to Paperny’s work or even Russian culture (unless I start blogging about my dissertation, lol) but when I was trying to come up with a name and I found that I already had this one I figured I might as well use it.

Sounds totally cool, Brian … my Ph.D. is in Comparative Literature, in particular the Gothic novel as it moved from England ever onward to Russia. I love the Russians, and love to recall the creepier stories (I think Turgenev was a little … well, you know. Anyway, if Gay doesn’t scare you away, have a look at my blog. Best, Mark
